Fiji Adventure Holidays

Fiji Advenuture. Fijian cultural meke dancing at Maravu Resort in Taveuni

The Fiji islands offer endless attractions to experience and numerous activities to do. There are many identified manmade and natural attractions including national heritage parks, eco-parks, gardens, cultural centres and temples. There are different types of activities ranging from nature based such as trekking, snorkelling, diving, surfing, canoeing, abseiling and cultural activities such as village tours, watching Fijian meke, kava ceremonies, watching fire-walking, etc. There are also facilities available to engage in sports such as golf and tennis.

Adventure Destinations in Fiji - popular regions to visit.

  • Adventure holidays may be had in many parts of Fiji, but one of the best-known adventure destinations is Taveuni island - third largest island in Fiji. Bouma National Heritage Park is a major attraction for Taveuni and is being developed and maintained by the communities. Vuna Archaeological Park has also developed into an attraction that draws tourists. Enjoy superb sport, deep-sea and game fishing, as well as world-class scuba diving on the Rainbow Reef. The island features beautiful rainforests and waterfalls, with rare birds and flowers, so hiking is popular.
  • Savusavu - another Northern Fiji destination - is also enjoyed for its adventure holiday opportunities and features a picturesque harbour and marina. Sailing, fishing, scuba diving, hiking and more. Waisali Forest Park is now completed and acts as an attraction for Vanua Levu. In addition, the Nukubolu Forest and Archaeological Park is being improved by the relevant owner communities.
  • Another well-travelled region for Fiji adventure is the island of Kadavu. The terrestrial and marine natural and cultural aspects of Kadavu provide it with the opportunity to accommodate those seeking authentic natural experiences. The nearby Astrolabe reef is one of Fiji's top diving locations. Whilst the focus is diving most resorts have relationships with local villages to provide lovo evenings, village visits, mekes, and guided walks to waterfalls etc. Nagigia Island Resort off the extreme western tip of Kadavu focusses on surfing vacations.
  • Many adventure activities may be found on Fiji's main island of Viti Levu, of course. Using 4WD, the Sabeto to Nausori road gives tourist access from Nadi into the Nausori highlands and Vaturu dam area. (Stay at the Heaven's Edge backpacker resort). Another road from Nadi goes up past the superb viewpoint of Vatutoka that overlooks the entire Nadi basin, thence on to the highlands village of Bukuya. From Bukuya, turn north to Ba via the superb Navala village that features all traditional bure houses, or turn south down through the highlands to the Sigatoka valley. At Sigatoka one can visit the historic and magnificent sand dunes, or drive up the other side of the Sigatoka valley to the ancient Tavuni hill fort.
  • The Yasawa Island group is a great 'budget adventure' destination, with small locally-owned resorts offering the opportunity of experiencing fun and adventure at low cost. The main transport linkage is the Awesome Adventures 'Yasawa Flyer' with daily return trips (maximum 250 passengers) stopping over at many accommodation properties from Kuata through Nanuya from Denarau. Other linkages are by seaplane flights to Turtle (Nanuya Lailai), Tavewa, Nacula and Yageta. There are also a small number of exclusive luxury resorts in the Yasawas that offer 'upmarket adventure' options.
  • The old capital Levuka on Ovalau promotes 'the way Fiji used to be' with its colonial buildings and heritage sites. A submission to enlist Levuka on the World Heritage List has been made by the National World Heritage Committee under the Ministry of Fijian Affairs. In the event that the colonial town of Levuka is listed, Ovalau will have significant attraction for visitors interested in this heritage.
  • There are also adventure cruise ship operators that visit the outer islands of Fiji. This encourages small ecotourism and community based tourism into the outer islands.

Eco-Tourism
In 2003, there were approximately 170 eco-tour/naturebased tour products in Fiji. The majority of these tours were available on the main island of Viti Levu as well as the island of Kadavu. The more popular ecotourism venues in Fiji are identified as the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, Sigatoka Sand dunes, Bouma National Heritage Park, Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and Tavuni Hill Fort. The Ministry of Tourism and Transport is currently supporting the ecotourism program to promote and encourage community based tourism and local involvement.
