Fiji Budget and Backpacker Travel
For budget travellers and backpackers journeying around the world, Fiji Islands is a paradise stopping point. There are budget hotels and resorts, backpacker lodges and beach huts, and lower budget options include dormitories and even camping opportunities. Fiji is a hub in the South Pacific and being a traditional airline port of call for international airline routes across the region has meant that budget travellers have been visiting and staying in Fiji for many, many years. Despite the growth of a wide variety of luxury resorts and retreats in recent years, Fiji remains a popular budget holiday destination. Most backpacking travellers to Fiji will visit many regions during their stay and inter-island ferries have made it increasingly easy to get around in Fiji.
Budget accommodation in Fiji - popular regions to visit.
- Nadi is a great starting point. Plenty of budget accommodation including the popular Wailoaloa Beach area on Nadi Bay. Though the beach is not the finest in Fiji by a long shot, it is flat, great for walking, jogging or frisbee throwing and best of all faces great sunsets to watch while drinking a Fiji beer at the end of each day!
- There are round-island buses that help backpacker tourists get around the main island of Viti Levu. Not to be missed is Robinson Crusoe island off the Natadola beach area on the west. Great fun for a day, or two, ... or more!
- Natadola Beach and Sigatoka beach further down the Coral Coast offer great surfing opportunities.
- Korotogo village on the Coral Coast has a number of economic holiday options. Mango Bay Resort, Waidroka Bay Resort (surfing here) and the BeachHouse all offer budget accommodation. Mango Bay and the BeachHouse both have nice beaches, especially Mango Bay. Then on to Pacific Harbour - the new Tsulu budget apartments are just one of many accommodation options in the area.
- The capital of Suva is interesting and worth maybe a day or so. The Raintree Lodge in the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park on the outskirts of the city is a good accommodation option, or there are budget hotels actually in the city.
- Continue round the island via the Kings Road is very scenic and takes one back up to the sunny northern coastline. Options here to be taken up are Nananu-i-Ra island off the north-west tip, which has a number of budget bure accommodation options, plus plenty of watersports activities. On the mainland at this point is the new Volivoli Beach Resort - a budget option on one of the only beaches along this stretch of coastline.
- On the way back to Nadi along the northern coastline, Lautoka has some budget hotels and then Saweni Beach Apartments is also an option to consider. Or turn inland at Ba and visit the authentic Fijian village of Navala and then on to the highlands village of Bukuya. Stay at the Bukuya Alpine centre. (Certainly not as cold as its name might suggest!)
- From Nadi, travel on one of the many ferries from Port Denarau out to the Mamanuca Islands (including Treasure Island, and Mana island) or up to the chain of Yasawa islands, with white sand beaches for relaxation, sun-baking and snorkelling.
- Hopefully you have time to catch one of the larger inter-island ferries to either Kadavu in the south, or to Taveuni and Savusavu in the north. All these outer islands are beautiful and have waterfalls, hiking, kayaking, scuba diving and more.
